You’ll travel by private 4×4 jeep through the Black and White Deserts on day one, drive to Luxor on day two after a stop at Crystal Mountain, and spend day three at Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings, and Hatshepsut Temple before returning to Cairo.
Most Egypt itineraries treat the desert and Luxor as separate trips, which usually means either skipping one entirely or spending an extra flight and hotel night to fit both in. Pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza is at 06:00 am, ahead of the roughly 4-hour drive to Bahariya Oasis, about 350 km east of Cairo. Two coffee breaks are built into the journey. Along the way, you'll pass the railway line still used to transport iron ore from Bahariya's mines — the oasis remains Egypt's main source of iron ore today.
Arriving around 10:00 am, you'll meet your safari guide and transfer into a private 4x4 jeep to begin the desert portion of the trip, driving first through the Black Desert, named for the dark volcanic powder covering its mountains and sand.
Lunch is served around noon at El Haize Oasis, roughly 37 km from Bawiti, an area historically settled by families originally from Libya during the Roman period. Before eating, there's time to soak in a natural hot spring, and a small water museum nearby explains traditional desert irrigation methods.
The afternoon continues to the Valley of Agabat, a landscape shaped by chalk and limestone formations that developed over millions of years after this area was once under the sea. There's time for sandboarding by jeep in Wadi El Agabat before reaching the White Desert National Park by late afternoon, where wind-carved rock formations resemble a chicken, a sphinx, camels, and mushrooms.
As evening sets in, camp is set up and dinner — typically chicken, rice, and vegetables around a small fire — is served under a sky shifting from pink to deep orange. Vegetarian meals are available. Nights can turn cold quickly in the White Desert, so a proper jacket is worth packing, though sleeping bags, tents, and mattresses are all provided.
After watching the sunrise and having breakfast in the desert around 07:00 am, you'll drive back toward Bahariya Oasis. On the way, around 09:00 am, you'll stop at Crystal Mountain, locally known as Gebel al-Izzaz — a quartzite hillside that catches the light in a way that explains its nickname, the "Jewel of the Desert," discovered by accident only a few decades ago.
By around 11:00 am, you'll pass through Bahariya and stop at Bir Sigam, considered the best hot spring in the area by temperature, located about 7 km east of Bahariya on the Cairo road. During summer, a cold spring at Bir Madi is offered instead as a cooler alternative. Lunch is served in Bahariya before the long drive to Luxor, covering about 740 km and taking roughly 8 hours. You'll spend the night in Luxor.
For early risers, an optional hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings is available before breakfast. After breakfast, your guide meets you to begin a full day covering Luxor's major sites.
The day starts at Karnak Temple, widely regarded as the largest ancient religious site in the world — three main temples spread across 247 acres, built up over generations of pharaohs. Travelers interested in a different pace can add an optional horse carriage tour through Luxor's souq and downtown streets before continuing.
You'll cross the Nile by motorboat to reach the West Bank, where lunch is served at a local restaurant serving authentic Egyptian food. The afternoon continues to the Valley of the Kings, burial ground of rulers from the 18th to 20th Dynasty, including tombs connected to Ramses II and the young Tutankhamun. Your visit includes three tombs; entry to Tutankhamun's tomb specifically is available for an additional $30 USD.
Nearby, you'll see the Colossi of Memnon, two 18-meter statues of Amenhotep III, the only visible remains of what was once the largest complex on Luxor's West Bank. The tour continues to Hatshepsut Temple, its terraces rising directly out of the limestone cliffs of the Theban Mountain in a way that makes the temple feel built into the landscape itself.
