This 8 Days Egypt Itinerary Cairo and White Desert takes you from the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum to Alexandria’s Roman ruins, then deep into the Western Desert for two full nights of camping among the White Desert’s chalk formations and the volcanic Black Desert. It’s built for travelers who want both sides of Egypt in one trip — the ancient monuments most people come for, and a genuinely different landscape that surprisingly few visitors ever reach.

Along the way you’ll stay in a mix of comfortable hotels and a proper desert camp, with private guides throughout, an English-speaking Bedouin driver in the desert, and all meals included once the desert portion begins.

Why Choose 8 Days Egypt Itinerary Cairo and White Desert

Most Egypt itineraries either stick to the Nile Valley or the desert — this one deliberately does both, and in a sequence that actually makes sense geographically. You start with Cairo’s must-see monuments and a day trip to Alexandria, then head west into the desert for the part of the trip most visitors never experience: two nights camping among the White Desert’s strange limestone formations, a hot spring soak at El Haize, and a cave with rock art that predates the pyramids by thousands of years.

Having a Bedouin driver who knows this terrain matters more than it might seem — much of the White Desert and Black Desert route runs off-road, and the difference between a rushed drive-through and a properly guided desert experience shows up in details like knowing exactly when to stop for sunset at Fatnas-style viewpoints or which rock formations are worth walking into versus just photographing from the jeep. All camping equipment, meals, and safety logistics are handled, so the adventure stays comfortable even when you’re sleeping under open sky.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Cairo

A Marsa Alam Tours representative meets you at Cairo International Airport and transfers you to your hotel by private air-conditioned vehicle. If your flight lands very early, it's worth reaching out in advance, since a tour suggestion for that first partial day can sometimes be arranged. You'll spend the night in Cairo.

Day 2: Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum

Your guide picks you up from your hotel in Giza at 8:00 am to begin a private day tour of the pyramids. You'll start at the Great Pyramid of Khufu, built in the 26th century BC over roughly 27 years. Originally standing 146.5 meters tall, it held the record as the tallest man-made structure on Earth for more than 3,800 years — today, with most of its outer limestone casing long gone, it stands at 138.5 meters, showing the core structure beneath.

From there, you'll visit the Pyramid of Khafre, the second-largest of the three, and the smaller Pyramid of Menkaure, taking in a panoramic view of all three together before moving to the Valley Temple and the Great Sphinx.

After a lunch break for authentic Egyptian food, the afternoon shifts to the Egyptian Museum, home to the world's largest collection of pharaonic antiquities. Travelers interested in the Royal Mummies Hall can ask their guide about an optional stop at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization instead, where many of these mummies are now displayed.

You'll also visit the Grand Egyptian Museum, currently open in its trial phase since October 2024, with access to the Great Hall, the Grand Staircase, and 12 main galleries — though certain sections, including the dedicated Tutankhamun galleries, remain closed pending the museum's full official opening. After roughly 8 hours of sightseeing, you'll be transferred back to your hotel for the night.

Day 3: Cairo to Alexandria

After breakfast, you'll drive to Alexandria for a full day exploring the city's Greco-Roman heritage. The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, believed to have been started in the 2nd century AD, served as a burial site for roughly 200 years during a period when Alexandria was a genuine melting pot of cultures.

Next comes Pompey's Pillar — a name that, despite appearances, has nothing to do with Pompey himself. The 25-meter red granite column, the tallest ancient monument in Alexandria, was likely built to honor Emperor Diocletian, though the surrounding site is thought to have connections to the Roman general's fate after his defeat by Caesar.

The day continues at the Citadel of Sultan Qaitbay, built in the 15th century using stone salvaged from the ruins of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, which had stood on the same site since the 3rd century BC before an earthquake in 1303 AD brought it down. Lunch is served at an Egyptian restaurant known for its seafood, with vegetarian options available on request. You'll return to Cairo for the night.

Day 4: Cairo to the White Desert

Pickup is early, at 06:00 am, for the roughly 4-hour drive to Bahariya Oasis, 350 km east of Cairo. Along the way, you'll pass the railway line still used to transport iron ore from Bahariya's mines to the steel mill at Helwan — a quiet reminder that this oasis has functioned as an important industrial link for generations, long before it became a desert tourism destination.

Arriving around 10:00 am, you'll meet your safari guide and set off by 4x4 into the Black Desert, where a layer of dark volcanic powder coats the mountains and sand, giving the landscape its name. Lunch is served around noon at El Haize Oasis, roughly 37 km from Bawiti — a site with its own distinct character, historically settled by families originally from Libya. Before eating, there's time to soak in a natural hot spring, and a small water museum here explains the traditional irrigation methods used to draw water from beneath the desert.

The afternoon continues to the Valley of Agabat, a landscape that was once under the sea millions of years ago, now shaped into striking chalk and limestone formations. By late afternoon, you'll reach the White Desert National Park itself, where rock formations resembling chickens, sphinxes, camels, and mushrooms rise out of the sand. As the sun sets, your camp is set up, and dinner — usually chicken, rice, and vegetables cooked over a small fire — is served under a sky that shifts from pink to deep orange. Vegetarian meals are available. Nights can turn surprisingly cold here, but sleeping bags, tents, and mattresses are all provided.

Day 5: Deeper into the White Desert

After watching the sunrise and having breakfast in the desert, you'll drive off-road to El Khor Mountain, an area of striking sand dunes about 70 km from the Valley of Agabat. From there, the route continues to Djara Cave, roughly 110 km further, home to the only rock art found within a 250 km range — well-preserved depictions of gazelles and other animals, beneath a dripstone ceiling formed over millions of years.

Nearby, you'll visit the Magic Spring, known locally as Ain El-Serw — Arabic for "secret." Its water reportedly rises when a person or animal approaches and settles again once they leave, a phenomenon nobody has fully explained. Lunch is served here before an afternoon of sandboarding among the Qaraween dunes by 4x4.

By late afternoon, you'll arrive back in the White Desert proper, watching the transition from the Black Desert's dark terrain to the pale, mushroom-shaped limestone formations that give the White Desert its name. You'll camp here for a second night, with another barbecue dinner under the stars.

Day 6: Discover Bahariya Oasis

After a second desert sunrise and breakfast, you'll begin the drive back toward Bahariya, stopping first at Crystal Mountain — locally known as Gebel al-Izzaz — a hill formed from quartzite crystals that catch the light in a way that makes it easy to see why it's nicknamed the Jewel of the Desert.

Around 11:00 am, you'll reach Bahariya Oasis and stop at Bir Sigam, considered the hottest and most relaxing of the area's natural hot springs, located about 7 km east of Bahariya along the Cairo road. After lunch at a local restaurant, the afternoon is spent exploring Bahariya itself — its palm and olive groves, Gebel Maghrafa, where the fossil of Stromer's Tidal Giant, one of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered, was found in 1914, and Lake al-Marun, the oasis's largest salt lake. The day closes with sunset views from the top of Gebel Al Ingleez, the English Mountain, overlooking the northern part of the oasis, before checking into your hotel in Bahariya for the night.

Day 7: Bahariya Oasis to Cairo

After breakfast, you'll visit the tombs of Bannentiu and Djed-Ankh-Amun-Iuf, part of a group of four 26th-Dynasty tombs discovered in 1938 by Egyptian archaeologist Ahmed Fakhry at Qarat Qasr Selim. From there, you'll explore Bawiti, the capital of Bahariya Oasis, followed by the Museum of the Golden Mummies and the Temple of Ain El-Muftella. After lunch in Bahariya, you'll drive back to Cairo for your final night.

Day 8: International Departure

After your stay in Egypt, you'll be picked up and transferred to Cairo International Airport for your international departure flight.

Optional Add-On: Islamic and Coptic Cairo Day

For travelers who'd like to extend their stay by a day, an optional Islamic and Coptic Cairo tour can be added before departure, turning this into a 9-day trip. It includes the Citadel of Salah El-Din, built between 1176 and 1182 and Egypt's seat of government until the 1860s; Old Cairo's Coptic sites, including the Hanging Church, the Ben Ezra Synagogue, and the Church of Abu Serga; the alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali, modeled on Istanbul's Blue Mosque; and Khan El Khalili Bazaar, one of the oldest markets in the Middle East. Lunch is served at a local restaurant in Old Cairo as part of this add-on day.
