Ras Mohammed was declared Egypt’s first national park in 1983. It covers the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, where the Red Sea splits into the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba. The two gulfs bring nutrient-rich water together, which is why the reefs here are so full of fish.
Most visitors only see Ras Mohammed from a boat. By bus, you see both halves of the park: the desert coast, the mangroves and the salt lake on land, plus the coral in the water. The drive from Sharm is short, and the whole trip is done by early afternoon, so the rest of the day is free for the pool or the beach.

Your driver collects you from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle. The road heads south through the Sinai desert until the coast opens up in front of you. [CONFIRM: On the way, there's a short stop at a shop where you can rent a mask and fins or buy beach accessories.]
The first stop is the Gate of Allah, the stone arch at the entrance of the park. It's a quick stretch and photo stop, and your guide explains the park rules and the plan for the day.
Next come the mangroves, salt-tolerant trees that grow directly in the sea water. Walk along the shore and look for white herons and small crabs near the roots. Your guide explains how the mangroves feed the reef system.
The Magic Lake, also known as the Lake of Desires, is a shallow salt lake cut off from the sea by a sandbank. The water is calm and very salty, so you float easily.
