Few journeys in Egypt can compare to a day spent tracing the footsteps of ancient gods. On this day trip to Edfu and Kom Ombo from Hurghada Makadi Bay by car, you’ll travel through desert landscapes and Nile-side towns to reach two of the most fascinating temples ever built — Edfu, home of the falcon god Horus, and Kom Ombo, the only double temple in Egypt.
This isn’t just a sightseeing tour — it’s a passage through time, where myth and stone merge to tell stories that have lasted over two thousand years.
Your adventure begins in the soft golden light of early morning. After being picked up from your hotel in Makadi Bay, you’ll set off in a private, air-conditioned vehicle with your expert Egyptologist guide.
The journey south toward Edfu and Kom Ombo is part of the experience — the shifting desert sands, scattered palm groves, and glimpses of rural life along the Nile offer a real taste of Egypt beyond the resorts.
After about four hours on the road, the landscape changes. The quiet hum of village life gives way to the towering stone gateway of Edfu Temple — one of the best-preserved monuments from Egypt’s Ptolemaic period.
Standing tall on the west bank of the Nile, Edfu Temple is dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god of protection and victory. As you walk through its massive gates guarded by twin granite statues of Horus, you immediately feel the weight of history.
This is one of Egypt’s most complete temples, its walls covered in stories of epic battles — especially the mythical fight between Horus and Seth, the god of chaos. The carvings are so detailed they seem alive, whispering tales of ancient drama and divine triumph.
Inside the inner sanctuaries, you’ll see the inscriptions that once guided priests in sacred rituals, and even references to the temple’s “library” — where scrolls of ancient wisdom were once stored. It’s an extraordinary reminder of how religion, knowledge, and art intertwined in the daily life of ancient Egyptians.
Leaving Edfu behind, your journey continues along the Nile to Kom Ombo, perched gracefully on the riverbank. Unlike any other temple in Egypt, Kom Ombo was shared by two gods — Sobek, the crocodile god of fertility, and Horus, protector of kings.
This rare duality is reflected in every part of the temple’s design: two entrances, two sanctuaries, and twin sets of hieroglyphs. Walking through the corridors, you can feel the symbolic balance between creation and protection — between life and power.
Kom Ombo is also a window into early medical science. On its walls, you’ll find carvings of surgical instruments, proving that the Egyptians had advanced knowledge of medicine long before the Greeks or Romans.
Nearby, the Crocodile Museum displays mummified crocodiles once worshipped as sacred embodiments of Sobek — a fascinating and eerie glimpse into one of the most unusual cults of ancient Egypt.
After exploring both temples, you’ll stop for a traditional Egyptian lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the Nile. Freshly baked bread, grilled meats, and aromatic spices make it a perfect moment to relax and absorb the beauty around you.
As the day draws to a close, your driver will escort you back to Makadi Bay in comfort, leaving you with memories of temples, legends, and landscapes that stay etched forever
