About this activity

This day trip to Luxor from Makadi Bay takes you to Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple and the Colossi of Memnon in one day, with an Egyptologist guide, lunch and entrance fees included. Choose the bus from €75, a small-group minivan from €120 or a private car from €160 per person. The day lasts about 14 hours, with 3.5 to 4 hours on the road each way.

Luxor is roughly 260 to 280 km from Makadi Bay, and it’s worth being plain about what that means. You leave in the dark, cross the eastern desert, drop into the green Nile Valley near Qena, and spend the middle of the day among the biggest monuments of ancient Thebes. Bring a pillow: the first stretch is a good time to sleep.

The program is the same on all three options. What changes is the vehicle, the size of the group and how much say you have over the day. Take the bus if price matters most, the minivan if you want a smaller group and a quieter ride, and the private car if you want to set the pace yourself.

Luxor day trip by bus

The most affordable way to do Luxor in a day. You get a seat in an air-conditioned coach, an Egyptologist, lunch and the entrance fees, and you see exactly the same sites as the other two options. The route and times are fixed and the coach may collect other guests along the way.

Luxor day trip by minivan

A step up in comfort. The group is small, so the pickup round is shorter, the guide talks to everyone at once and nobody gets lost at the temples. It is still a shared tour, so the schedule is set for the group.

Private day trip to Luxor by car

Your own car, your own Egyptologist and a day built around you. Spend longer in the Hypostyle Hall at Karnak, slow down on the tomb paintings, or skip what doesn’t interest you. The minimum is two people, and it is the most expensive of the three options.

Highlights

  • Karnak Temple, the largest temple complex in Egypt, with the Great Hypostyle Hall
  • The Valley of the Kings: three royal tombs explained by your Egyptologist
  • Hatshepsut Temple, built in terraces against the cliffs at Deir el-Bahari
  • The Colossi of Memnon, two statues of Amenhotep III about 18 m high
  • A motorboat crossing of the Nile from the east bank to the west bank
  • Lunch at a local restaurant, entrance fees and bottled water included
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off in Makadi Bay in an air-conditioned vehicle
  • Three ways to go: bus, small-group minivan or private car

Included/Excluded

  • Round-trip transfer from your Makadi Bay hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle

  • Motorboat crossing of the Nile
  • Bottled water
  • All taxes and service charges
  • Drinks with lunch

  • The separate ticket for Tutankhamun's tomb and other special tombs

Itinerary

The day, step by step

  1. 04:30 to 05:30, pickup. Your vehicle collects you at your hotel. Order a breakfast box at reception the evening before, because there's no time for a sit-down breakfast.
  2. The road to Luxor. Desert first, then the Nile Valley around Qena. There's a rest stop after about 1.5 to 2 hours, and you'll pass 2 or 3 short police checkpoints. They're routine, so keep your passport handy.
  3. About 09:30, Karnak. You start on the east bank in the forest of columns of the Great Hypostyle Hall, then see the obelisks and the sacred lake.
  4. Crossing the Nile. A motorboat takes you to the west bank.
  5. The Colossi of Memnon. A short stop for photos at the two seated statues of Amenhotep III.
  6. Lunch at a local restaurant.
  7. The Valley of the Kings. Your guide takes you into three tombs and explains the painted walls. Only some tombs are open at any time. Tutankhamun's tomb, found by Howard Carter in 1922, and a few other special tombs need a separate ticket paid on site.
  8. Hatshepsut Temple. The terraced temple at Deir el-Bahari, built for one of ancient Egypt's most famous female pharaohs, closes the sightseeing.
  9. About 16:00, the drive back. You reach your hotel around 20:00 to 21:00.

If Luxor is on your list and you can only spare one day, yes. In about 14 hours you see four of its main sights with a guide, and you don't have to organize a thing. The cost is time: an early start, a long drive each way and a full day on your feet. If you'd rather avoid the long drive, Luxor probably isn't the right day for you, and that's fine to know before you book.

Luxor is usually hotter than Makadi Bay, so wear light cotton or linen, a hat and sunglasses, and bring sunscreen. Shoes should be closed and comfortable, because the ground is uneven. Shoulders and knees should be covered at the temples. From October to April the mornings and evenings are cool, so bring a light jacket, and the vehicle's air conditioning can feel cold too. Don't forget your passport and your camera.
