A dune buggy is a small off-road car with a roll cage, automatic gears and seats side by side, so the driver and passenger ride together. It feels more stable than a quad bike and you can talk to each other on the way, which is why couples and families often choose it.
Your guide leads the group in a line through the desert. You start on flat stretches to get used to the controls, then move on to small dunes, dips and valleys between the mountains. Halfway through, you stop at a Bedouin camp for tea in the shade.
Local tip: from May to September, choose the sunrise or sunset slot. The midday desert is very hot, and the soft evening light also makes the best photos.

An air-conditioned vehicle collects you from your hotel. The drive takes around 30 minutes, and you watch the resorts give way to open desert and mountains.
At the buggy center, your instructor shows you the controls, fits your helmet and explains how the group drives together. The buggies are automatic, so you just steer, accelerate and brake.
Once everyone is comfortable, you set off behind the guide. The route mixes flat sand for building confidence with climbs over dunes, dips and narrow wadis. In some valleys, the rock walls echo the sound of the engines back at you.
