snorkeling marsa alam – Sharm El Luli tour details

Bay description
Looking around, I was struck by the sense of total peace that this place is capable of transmitting.
The panorama, practically bicromatic, is constituted by one side of simple and pure desert, that with its warm tones surrounds the bay, while on the other one opens the Red Sea which gradually slopes in turquoise shades more and more heated and intense until it reaches the dark blue of the Depths.
When the Sun falls the shadows stretch, reflecting among the waves of the sea; it is nice to stroll on the shore, while the grains of sand, affected by the rays of the sunset, become more and more similar to tiny, sparkling specks.
The soft light around the edges of the cliffs and the dark silhouettes of the desert dunes stand out sharp on the horizon, painting a natural skyline simply magical
The beach as well as the surrounding desert and coast line lie inside the Wadi El Gemal (“Valley of the Camels”) National Park – which also means that it’s a great location for enjoying the protected virgin reefs and exotic marine life.

But what can you do in Sharm El Luli?
Well, besides the possibility to indulge in a few hours of total relaxation, immersed in an almost unreal silence, this beach is famous and renowned for its incredible depths.
What distinguishes it from the stretches of coastline on which the resorts rise, or from other areas of the coastline, is the possibility to walk the reef. The sandy bottom, like the Maldivian or the Caribbean, does not need in fact the construction of piers and structures that facilitate access to the barrier to which you approach slowly, after walking in shallow water and then wearing fins, Mask and mouthpiece to start swimming when the sea becomes deeper with a maximum depth of 20 meters to the shore side of the reefs.

If you spend time snorkelling you can marvel at the quick darting movements of the butterfly fish, the slower skulking behaviour of solitary groupers or puffer fish, the exotic colored Napoleons and the bright orange clownfish usually hiding among anemone tentacles.
If you are lucky probably due to the relative protection of the surrounding National Park, your chances of seeing sea turtles, including the hawksbill, are usually good – perhaps 50% or greater,
The endangered hawksbill
Considered by many to be the most beautiful of sea turtles for their colorful shells, the hawksbill is found in tropical waters around the world. They spend their time in coral reefs, rocky areas, lagoons, mangroves, oceanic islands, and shallow coastal areas.
Named for its narrow head and sharp, bird-like beak, hawksbills can reach into cracks and crevices of coral reefs looking for food. Their diet is very specialized, feeding almost exclusively on sponges. One of the smaller turtles, adults weigh between 100-200 pounds (45 – 90 kg) and reach 2-3 feet (roughly .5 to 1 meter) in length
Hawksbills are important inhabitants of coral reefs. By consuming sponges, they play an important role in the reef community, aiding corals in growth. It’s estimated that one turtle can consume over 1,000 pounds of sponges per year. Without them, sponges have the ability to overgrow corals and suffocate reefs.
It is illegal to trade, purchase or possess sea turtle products. When purchasing “tortoiseshell” products overseas, be sure you are buying synthetic materials

  • Bring rug for the sand or even some large extra towels for sitting on the sands – as there are no sun beds or deck chairs on the beach.

Marsa Alam city’s tips and advice
  • Before you go to Sharm El Luli ask about the weather and avoid the windy days – the sea will be choppy, underwater visibility will be poor, there will be a lot of sand in the air and it will be almost impossible to enjoy the beach
  • Remember that some of the reefs are far from the shore and you can wade out a long way – so do keep an eye on how far you are from the shore line
  • If you are not a very strong swimmer it’s probably best to use a life jacket when snorkeling to minimize any possible risk
  • While you are walking if you found any small rocks don’t move it away
  • Remember don’t drop anything in the water or at the sands like plastic products or trash bags, that lesion the sea animals and the reef and the birds
