I’ve never been a big fan of fishing and even when I tried to fish I wasn’t lucky enough to get any good catch. When I was working in Leith, Saudi Arabia, our workplace was located on the Red Sea, and the only decent thing to do on weekends was swimming, diving or fishing in the Red Sea. We could drive to the fun mountain resorts like Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Marsa Alam and Taba and enjoy the mild weather, but that took a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many species of fish found in the Red Sea are considered delicious and are popular for their flavor and texture. Some of the most popular and delicious types of fish from the Red Sea include:<\/p>\n

The Red Sea contains more than 1,240 miles (2,000 km) of coral reefs, over 5,000 years old, which provide shelter and food for more than 1,200 species of fish. 10% of this species cannot be found in any other seas of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another reason for the peculiarity of the Red Sea is its high salinity level of about 40 parts per thousand. This is higher than the global average of 35 parts per thousand by about 14%, due to the following:<\/span><\/p>\n

The countries bordering the Red Sea are mainly desert countries (Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Djibouti) that receive less rain than other parts of the world and do not produce large rivers that drain into the sea.<\/span>
These desert countries also experience extremely hot weather which results in a high rate of evaporation.<\/span>
The geographical shape of the sea restricts access to neighboring seas (Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Mediterranean Sea) with low salinity levels.<\/span>
This high level of salinity makes diving difficult, as every time you dive, the sea pushes you to the surface again. The only way to stay below the surface is to stick to the reef or wear something heavy.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the things I noticed about these fish is their colours. It is very colourful. My favorite fish is called the parrot fish. It got its name from its clinging teeth and strong parrot-like beak. This brightly colored fish is hermaphrodite and appears to live in a harem with a strong and dominant parrotfish. Talk about life!<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you know why some fish are more colorful than others? It seems that in their fight for their teammates, the most colorful and brightly colored fish will win the battle. They will also change their color to indicate their readiness and willingness to mate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some will use color as camouflage while others will use color as a form of communication. In general, coral fish are hotter than open sea fish.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Red Sea is home to several species of fish including some dangerous species. Some of the aggressive and poisonous fish found in the area where we swim and fish are as follows.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are more than 320 species of sharks in the Red Sea. Aggressive and voracious predators are tiger sharks, hammerhead sharks, and gray sharks. Gray sharks have been seen in several places near our coast. The place where we swam and fished is protected by several miles of coral reefs and shallow water that prevents sharks from entering.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other fish that are notorious for being aggressive are moray eels and surgeonfish.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Despite their appearance, moray eels are actually shy creatures and will only attack in self-defense. This usually happens if you disable their burrow. They also have poor vision, so they will rely primarily on their sense of smell. If you try to feed moray eels manually, you may end up losing your finger because they may have trouble distinguishing food from your finger.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pufferfish and Boxfish are some of the poisonous fish found in this area. Filipino employees are begging me to disagree on this. For them, if the puffer fish is prepared properly it is edible and is one of their favorite fish.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have never tried eel before. In fact, the sight of the creature stopped me. It also reminds me of the evil eel characters, Flotsam and Jetsam, in Disney’s The Little Mermaid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the eel looks like a sea eel, it is actually a fish. It looks fierce and you’d never think it could be so cool!<\/span><\/p>\n

Later, I did some research and found that liver is the tastiest and best part of fish. It is also the most toxic substance if not prepared properly. This dish is popular in Japan, but in 1984 serving swollen liver was banned as a precaution.<\/span><\/p>\n

How did the Red Sea get its name?<\/strong><\/span>
You may be wondering how the Red Sea got its name and is it red in color.<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, the sea is a beautiful blue, not red. Sometimes, it looks red. This is due to the seasonal flowering of the marine plant, Trichodesmium erythraeum, which produces red flowers. Perhaps that is how it got its name.<\/span><\/p>\n

The relatively good weather, the warm climate, the diversity of fish species and the calmness of the Red Sea make fishing an active sport and industry all year round. This is happening in countries like Egypt but not in Saudi Arabia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite having 4,703 miles (7,570 km) of coastline and an abundance of fish in coastal waters, Saudi Arabia’s fishing industry remains underdeveloped.<\/span><\/p>\n
